Androgenetic alopecia, commonly referred to as male pattern baldness, affects a large population of men. While it has no cure, male pattern baldness can be treated with a variety of methods, including hair loss products, hair loss treatments and hair transplantation surgery. Recently, platelet rich plasma (PRP) therapy has shown promising results in combating thinning hair and restoring fading hairlines for both men and women.
Hair Growth Explained
Hair grows in three stages: the anagen stage (the growth phase), the catagen stage (the transitional phase), and the telogen stage (the resting phase). This cycle varies in length for each hair follicle but can last anywhere from two to seven years. When hair follicles die out and hair begins to thin, it is a result of hair becoming stuck in the telogen phase and not entering a new growth phase. The exact reason for this is not completely understood, although scientific research points to the hormone dihydrotestosterone as the culprit behind hair loss.
PRP therapy encourages follicles to re-enter the anagen phase through a direct infusion of growth and healing factors. Results have shown that follicles in areas targeted by PRP therapy show new growth and restore thinning hair.
A small amount of your blood will be extracted at the start of the procedure. The blood will then be centrifuged to remove the PRP from the blood cells in preparation for the treatment. Once properly separated, the PRP will be administered to the targeted areas on the scalp through a series of injections. A topical anesthetic may be applied to increase patient comfort.
The treatment takes anywhere from 30 minutes to one hour and has no downtime. Because the PRP is taken from your own body, no adverse side effects or allergic reactions are possible with PRP therapy. You may notice a mild amount of bleeding or pain at the injection sites, but your scalp will recover within 24 hours.
PRP Treatments as a Supplemental Procedure
PRP therapy for hair loss works best when administered regularly and combined with medicated hair loss products. Regular treatments should be scheduled every three to four months to continue to see results. Medicated products such as Rogaine (minoxidil) and Propecia (finasteride) can further target hair loss. When supplemented with PRP therapy, these products can make a noticeable impact on thinning hair.
PRP therapy can even be used to complement hair transplantation surgery. A direct injection of PRP to newly-transplanted hair follicles can accelerate healing and encourage faster hair growth. PRP therapy can also be used in preparation for hair transplantation surgery by restoring hair in common donor sites along the sides and back of the scalp.
