A tummy tuck is designed to give the abdomen a firm and smooth appearance. Excess skin and fat are removed to enhance the abdominal contour. A tummy tuck will also serve to tighten the abdominal muscles and trim the waistline. The best candidates are men and women who have excess fat and loose skin or muscle of their abdominal wall, from pregnancy or weight loss, despite diet and exercise. The incision at the lower part of the abdomen can be hidden in the bikini line or underwear.
Patients who are not happy with the way their tummy looks may benefit from one of several procedures:
For individuals with tight skin and good muscle tone, but an excess of fat. Some people requesting a tummy tuck may be better candidates for liposuction. The advantage is a quicker recovery period and avoidance of the lower abdominal scar. A special form of abdominal liposuction is the creation of a six-pack abdomen through abdominal etching, which showcases the abdominal muscles after the fat surrounding them has been removed through liposuction.
For people with good muscle tone, minimal fat, and good skin tone above the belly button, but loose skin below the belly button. Excess skin below the belly button is excised. This procedure takes about two hours and is typically done under general anesthesia. An incision is made hip to hip, excess skin is excised, minimal liposuction is performed, and muscles are tightened, if necessary.
For people with loose muscle tone, extra abdominal fat, and loose skin above and below the belly button. Excess skin is excised, abdominal muscles are tightened, and excess fat is liposuctioned from the abdomen and flanks. The procedure typically takes about two to three hours on average and involves making an incision in the lower abdomen, from hip to hip, and around the belly button. The skin and fat flap are then elevated up to the ribcage, and excess skin is removed without injuring the belly button. As the skin and fat flap is elevated, the abdominal muscles are tightened to create firm abdominal muscles. By tightening the muscles, a nice waistline is formed. Next, the skin is closed, leaving scars in the lower abdomen and around the belly button. The flanks, or sides, are liposuctioned, if needed, further enhancing the patient’s waistline. The end result is a firmer, more aesthetically pleasing abdomen.
For people with loose muscle tone, loose skin above and below the belly button, and a larger amount of fat in the abdomen and flanks. The incision may have to be extended around the flanks or an inverted “T” incision. This procedure can be thought of as an exaggerated tummy tuck- more skin is removed, more fat is removed, and more significant muscle tightening is accomplished. This procedure takes three to four hours. It involves making an incision in the lower abdomen, from hip to hip and around the belly button, elevating the skin and fat flap up to the ribcage, and removing the excess skin without injuring the belly button. As the skin and fat flap is elevated, the abdominal muscles are tightened to create firm abdominal muscles. Next, the skin is closed, leaving scars in the lower abdomen and around the belly button. The flanks, or sides, are also treated with liposuction. The scar is around the belly button and from hip to hip, extending to the flanks, and possibly including a vertical abdominal scar as well.
A tummy tuck can do more than flatten your stomach—it can completely change how you feel in your skin. Patients often notice a smoother, tighter midsection, improved core strength, and a more defined waistline.
For women who have had children or anyone who has lost significant weight, a tummy tuck can help remove loose skin and repair stretched abdominal muscles. It can also reduce the appearance of stretch marks (especially below the belly button), improve posture by tightening weakened muscles, and make clothes fit and feel better.
An initial consultation is scheduled, during which we discuss the tummy tuck procedure and determine if you are a suitable candidate for the surgery. Your medical history will be reviewed, and you will be asked to see your medical doctor for a physical check-up and a few laboratory tests to ensure you can undergo the surgery safely. You are allowed to be seen by your own doctor to obtain clearance for surgery. You are asked to stop medications that cause bleeding, such as aspirin or aspirin-like products (Motrin or Ibuprofen), a week before this procedure. You are asked to stop smoking two weeks before and two weeks after surgery, for the surgery to be performed safely, and for you to have optimal results. You are given the opportunity to speak with patients who have undergone the same surgery you are considering. We will see you shortly after the surgery (in a day or two, usually). You are seen regularly after your surgery. You are always welcome to return for a follow-up, even years after your surgery, at no additional charge.
Good candidates are generally healthy, non-smoking individuals who are at a stable weight and bothered by loose skin, muscle laxity, or stubborn belly fat that won’t subside with diet and exercise. Women who have had children or individuals who have lost a significant amount of weight are often ideal candidates, especially if they’re done having children. If you’re close to your goal weight and want to enhance your abdominal contour, a tummy tuck may be the next right step.
When you arrive at our Fairfax surgical center, you’ll check in, meet with Dr. Bitar to review your surgical plan, and have markings placed while standing for optimal precision. Once you’re prepped, a board-certified anesthesiologist will administer general anesthesia in our AAAASF-accredited operating suite.
During the procedure, Dr. Bitar makes a low incision across the lower abdomen, strategically placed to stay hidden under most underwear or swimsuits. He lifts the skin and fat to access the abdominal muscles, which are tightened if needed. Excess skin is removed, liposuction may be used to contour the flanks or upper abdomen, and your belly button is repositioned if necessary.
The incisions are then closed in layers to promote smooth healing, and small drains may be inserted to prevent fluid accumulation. After surgery, you’ll recover on-site with our nursing team before heading home the same day wearing a compression garment.
Our office will provide a comprehensive post-operative plan to ensure the best possible outcome. The plan will outline what to expect postoperatively, including estimated recovery time, pain management, garments or dressings, and anticipated activity level. For your safety, we require that an adult stay with you at least the first 24 hours after surgery and drive you to your next day follow-up visit. With most procedures, you will be instructed to limit activity for the first week or two, which could include restrictions on driving, prolonged travel, and flying. Additionally, we recommend that you refrain from exercise until cleared by your physician, typically around four weeks post-surgery. You are asked to refrain from smoking for a minimum of two weeks. To optimize healing, we recommend that you eat a high-protein diet. You should anticipate a variable degree of bruising and swelling, as with any surgical procedure; light make-up may be used to cover bruises starting a week after surgery. We also offer scar creams at an additional cost to optimize results.
To promote healing and minimize complications, you will be seen in a series of post-op appointments, including the day after surgery. These appointments will continue throughout the first year after the procedure to make sure you are healing as planned. For your added convenience, you also have direct access to Dr. Bitar’s cell phone number, should you need to reach him outside of office hours. The final post-operative visit, one year after surgery, is one of our favorites, as the results are fully apparent, and we love seeing our patients happy. You are always welcome to return and visit us, even years after your surgery.
