Any woman can enjoy the physical enhancement and feelings of confidence and femininity that follow a breast augmentation. One reason for breast surgery is to make small breasts larger. Saline and silicone gel breast implants can effectively increase the size of the breasts. The procedure is personalized to the aesthetic desires of the patient by careful selection of implant type, implant size, location of the incision, and implant location. There are various options for patients to choose from and we will guide you along the way, informing you of the benefits and disadvantages of each choice.

Another motivation for breast enhancement surgery is to create better symmetry. Although it is common, some women are embarrassed by the uneven size and shape of their breasts. A simple solution is to use implants, which can be filled to different levels to compensate for the disparity in size. A combination of breast augmentation and breast lift may be performed to achieve optimal results.

To make sure you receive all the information about the surgery you could possible want, it can be arranged for you to speak to a patient of Bitar Cosmetic Surgery Institute who has undergone breast augmentation as well.

Breast Augmentation Procedure Overview

Breast implant surgery takes thirty minute to one-and-a-half hours to perform on average. Typically, general anesthesia is administered for the patient’s comfort.

An incision will be made in one of several locations. One common placement is under the arm in the crease of the armpit. An inframammary fold incision is one which is made in the crease under the breast. Incisions can also be made at the lower border of the areola or in the belly button. The surgeons at Bitar Cosmetic Surgery Institute prefer to use the under-arm or inframammary incision, but will also consider making the incision at the edge of the areola at the request of the patient. We do not perform belly button approach breast augmentations due to the risk of damage that can occur to the implant, breast tissue, and breast muscle.

Whatever the incision location, the implant can then be placed above or below the breast muscle. Dr. Bitar and other board-certified plastic surgeons often prefer to place the implant under the muscles because it offers the most natural feel and look. Implants placed here are also less likely to interfere with a mammogram and the risk of rippling is diminished. However, you should let us know if you are a professional athlete or body builder since implants behind the pectoral muscles can shift in woman with these professions.

Breast Augmentation Surgery Recovery

Patients return home a few hours after breast augmentation surgery. There may be some moderate discomfort, which can be controlled with pain medication. Swelling is also normal and will gradually subside over the course of a few weeks. Most patients are able and comfortable enough to return to most of their regular activities after one to two weeks. More strenuous physical activity, such as exercise, should be avoided for four weeks after surgery. You will return for follow-ups with your surgeon periodically. The full results will be observed after six to twelve months.

Complications can occur with breast augmentation, but we take careful measures to ensure your risk is as low as possible. Bleeding and infection only occur in about 2% of cases, but the possibility must be taken very seriously. Capsular contracture, rippling, deflation or rupture, and loss of nipple sensation are other complications that we aim to avoid. Although a common concern of breast surgery patients is that they will not be able to breast feed after augmentation, this has never been the case with any of our patients. Dissections are made away from the milk duct to preserve the possibility of nursing in the future.

Breast Augmentation Surgery FAQs

Q – What is breast augmentation?

A – Breast augmentation is also referred to as breast enlargement, breast enhancement surgery and, more technically, as augmentation mammaplasty. Much less technically it is referred to as a “boob job.” All the monikers refer to increasing the volume of the breasts with a saline or silicone gel breast implant.

Q – Who is a good candidate for breast enlargement surgery?

A – Women who are physically healthy and have realistic expectations may be good candidates for breast augmentation. Implants are often placed after pregnancy or weight loss have left them deflated, to create better symmetry, for reconstruction after a mastectomy, or simply to create a larger size that is preferred by a female patient. Breast augmentation will not lift sagging breast, but will add volume. If sagging is also a problem, the procedure can be combined with a breast lift.

Q – How do I know what breast implant size is right for me?

A – You will have ample time to figure out what the best size implant is for you during your consultations at Bitar Cosmetic Surgery Institute. We will help you find an implant size that is in proportion with your body’s frame. This will create the most natural look. Of course, there are also women who would like their implants to be on the large side, which is ok, as long as that is what you truly desire. You will be able to “test” various size implants before finally deciding which is right for you.

More often than not, patients end up very pleased with the end result. If not, the implant can be changed at a later date with more surgery.

Q – What is the difference between saline and silicone implants?

A – Saline and silicone implants are two kinds of breast implants approved for primary breast augmentation by the FDA. Decisions about which type to use will me made based on the preference of the patient, the surgeon’s recommendation, and the results of breast exams. Silicone implants tend to feel more natural than saline, and are thus preferred for patient who have little breast tissue and muscle. Saline can be used when there is sufficient tissue and the implant is being placed behind the muscle. The price also differs. Your surgeon will discuss the benefits of each further with you.

Q – Will I have a scar after breast augmentation?

A – The incisions for breast augmentation are most often placed in the armpit or under the fold of the breast. While there may be some scarring, it is very minimal. Under-arm scars are only about 2 cm and the scars left under the breast are well hidden within the natural crease.
